New online community map puts words in their place

6th October 2010 by Paul Waddington

Wry nerd cartoon site XKCD does it again, this time with a magnificent map depicting the landscape of online communities today. Despite their high profile, this map still places social networks as growing but still insignificant ‘countries’ amidst the d0minance of email and text messaging.

Anyone in the writing business should take cheer though that what XKCD’s map depicts is a world of words. This is where many people live today. Being good with the written word – whether the language is ‘txtspeak’, ‘forumese’ or ‘business website’ – remains an important life skill.
